El Chaltén

Full day excursion or you can choose to spend several days in the area. Take road 11 from El Calafate and  travel 37 km to road 40, make a left turn and continue north, crossing Santa Cruz river and bordering Lago Argentino lake until you reach La Leona, a historic hosteria named after the river. Enjoy a delicious homemade cake or snack, coffee and/or use the restrooms.

Continue on road 40 bordering Lago Viedma and enjoy the first views of Cerro Fitz Roy until you meet road 23, make a left and continue to El Chaltén. The town is known for its incredible glacier landscapes and walking trails.


It is advisable to drive with precaution due to stray animals near the roads and strong lateral winds; specially during spring and summer.

El Chaltén is a small town with many lodging and eating options.  Camping sites and gas station available.

 

Round Trip Distance from El Calafate: 440 Km

IMPORTANTE: 

Expect some sinuous curves and/or poor condition roads in the area. No gas stations available during the trip.
